*This post is made in partnership with Explore Cabarrus
If you’re craving a simple, festive, memory-filled holiday outing that doesn’t involve long drives or complicated planning, Kannapolis should absolutely be on your list. Just about 45 minutes from Charlotte, this charming small town transforms into a cozy holiday wonderland full of classic family experiences, nostalgic attractions, great food, and the kind of magic kids remember for years. This easy itinerary is the perfect way to enjoy a slow, joyful holiday day trip close to home.
Start Your Day at the Historic Gem Theatre, a Holiday Classic
We kicked off our day at the historic Gem Theatre, and it truly sets the tone for a magical family outing. The theater has been a community staple for more than 85 years, and the moment you walk in, you feel it. The vintage ticket booth, the old marquee, and even original movie posters from films that premiered here, such as 101 Dalmatians, make it feel special.
We watched Zootopia during our visit, and it was the perfect mix of nostalgia for us and excitement for the kids. It is one of those rare places where the experience feels just as magical as the movie itself.
Shop and Stroll Through Main Street
After the movie, we headed over to Main Street, which is filled with charming small businesses and festive windows this time of year. We browsed adorable children’s boutiques and stopped into Falls Jewelers, a local family-owned shop that is part of our story. They even designed our 10-year anniversary ring.
It is the kind of Main Street where you slow down, sip a hot drink, and find thoughtful gifts you will not see anywhere else. Every shop owner greets you, the lights are twinkling, and the whole place feels extra cozy during the holidays.
Dinner at Towel City Tavern, Comfort Food With a View
When dinner time arrived, we made our way to Towel City Tavern, which is such a fun family spot. Their barbecue platter was a hit, and the restaurant overlooks the town’s baseball field, a unique view that the kids loved.
The menu is big and works well for picky eaters, and the atmosphere is warm and lively without feeling overwhelming.
If you are visiting on Saturday, December 13, you will get something special. Towel City Tavern is hosting a Christmas Market with local vendors, and the Grinch will stop by in the morning for photos and fun. It is a great way to add a little extra holiday excitement to your trip.
End the Night at the Celebration of Lights at Village Park
We wrapped up our day at Village Park, home to one of our favorite holiday traditions: the Celebration of Lights.
The entire park is covered in thousands of twinkling lights. Tunnels, displays, trees, bridges, and every corner glows with magical holiday sparkle. Kids can visit Santa, watch the singing bear show, and ride the historic carousel or the park’s train.
Visiting the lights is completely free, and the train and carousel are only two dollars per person. It is an affordable family adventure that feels special. We love ending the night here because the mix of lights, music, and laughter creates the perfect holiday moment.
