36 Hours in Raleigh, NC: How to Spend a Fall Weekend in the City—Fair and All

As a Triangle local, I’ve spent countless weekends exploring Raleigh—but there’s something extra special about fall in the city. With crisp mornings, golden leaves, and the return of the NC State Fair, this season is the perfect time to slow down and soak in all the best parts of Raleigh. Whether you're planning a staycation or showing off your hometown to out-of-town guests, here’s how I’d spend an ideal 36 hours in Raleigh during fair season—packed with great eats, outdoor strolls, and, yes, a swordfish on a stick.

Where to Stay in Raleigh

State View Hotel
For our most recent visit, we chose the State View Hotel for its convenient location near Dix Park, Pullen Park, and the NC State Fair. While the proximity was a major plus, the customer service during our stay left something to be desired. If location is your top priority, it might still be a decent option but Raleigh offers plenty of other comfortable and well-reviewed hotels worth considering but maybe a bit further of a drive. Embassy Suites in Cary or RTP
If you're willing to drive a bit from the NC State area, there are two nearby Embassy Suites locations—one in Cary and another in Brier Creek. Both are exceptionally clean, offer spacious suites perfect for families, and include free on-site breakfast. They're great options if you prioritize comfort and amenities over being right in the city center. The one is Brier Creek is located next to a shopping and restaurants.

Where to Play in Raleigh

The NC State Fair is back in Raleigh now through October 26!

I got to preview over 30 new foods at their media event, and let me tell you—there’s something for everyone. One standout? The Swordfish on a Stick from Oak City Fish & Chips near Gate 1. It comes with a lemon wedge on top, and trust me, you’ll want to get your hands messy with that squeeze.

🍗 Best New Savory: Deep Fried Lamb Chops @lp_que
🍭 Best New Sweet: Cinna Mozza Korean Corn Dog @goldenkdog

If you’re planning to go, grab your tickets in advance to save some cash—prices at the gate range from $10–$13 for adults and $0–$7 for kids. The fairgrounds open daily at 9am and close at 11pm on weekdays and midnight on weekends. Pro tip: bring a clear bag to breeze through security and get there at 8:30am to avoid crowds and parking headaches. Daily event schedule here.

Gibson Play Plaza
Gibson Play Plaza is a brand-new, 19-acre park with a playground, splash pad, sensory games, picnic areas, and grills. It is a perfect spot for families to spend the entire day enjoying outdoor activities and exploring nature. Recap Reel Here

Dix Park Sunflower Fields
During July, the sunflower fields at Dix Park are in full bloom and are breathtaking to visit. The park also has hammocks and stunning views of the Raleigh skyline. Arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy the peaceful beauty of the sunflowers.

Located downtown near Moore Square, it features creative exhibits like a giant pirate ship, pretend city play zones, art and science labs, and a splash zone, all aimed at encouraging learning through play.
